Description
This is an antique Bromo-Seltzer wooden shipping crate manufactured for the Emerson Drug Co. out of Baltimore, Maryland. [1, 2]Historical OverviewThe Product: Bromo-Seltzer was an effervescent (fizzy) antacid and pain remedy invented in 1888 by Isaac E. Emerson. It was famously marketed to cure hangovers, headaches, and stomach upset. [1, 2, 3, 4]The Ingredients: The "Bromo" in the name came from sodium bromide, a strong sedative. Early formulas also included acetanilide. Both ingredients were later recognized as dangerous and toxic, eventually leading to formula modifications and the removal of bromides from the U.S. market in 1975. [1, 2, 3]The Bottle Context: These crates were used to transport the iconic, highly collectible cobalt blue glass bottles that housed the headache powder. [1, 2, 3]Age: Based on the typography, the crisp finger-jointed corner construction, and the "10¢" pricing graphic, this crate likely dates from the late 1890s to the 1910s.Item measures 9.5 in x 11 in x 8.5 in
