Program for a performance by Phill Niblock at the Whitney Museum of American Art, Noontime Performance Series, Tuesday, October 20, 1981. Pieces included SLS, A Trombone Piece, and PK and SLS. Niblock built his compositions by multi-tracking recordings of instrumentalists holding precisely tuned, closely spaced microtones, splicing out breaths and attacks so that the result is a dense, rhythmless drone in which beating patterns, difference tones, and overtones arise from interference between the layers and from the acoustics of the room itself, effects that emerge only at high volume. From 1973 onward he paired this music with his own films of manual labor, the decades-long series The Movement of People Working, shot in Peru, Mexico, Hungary, Portugal, China, Lesotho, and elsewhere, in which unedited footage of hammering, harvesting, fishing, and dyeing runs in parallel with the sound rather than illustrating it.
