EJI INO (b.1949) began his artistic career as an oil painter, hosting numerous solo and group gallery exhibitions between 1974 and 1986. Heavily influenced by the Sosaku-hanga (creative print) movement, he transitioned his focus to traditional woodblock printmaking and established his independent self-publishing studio, Sonobashinogisha, in 1988. Ino is highly celebrated for his meticulously handcrafted, limited-edition multi-color print collections - most notably his extensive travelogues, railroad landscape anthologies (such as the Chichibu Railway and Hitachi Electric Railway series), and his long-running botanical collection, Hana Biyori (Ideal Flower Weather). Embracing the core philosophy of creating his work completely alone, he handles the entire production pipeline by self-drawing, self-carving, and self-printing every single piece. While Ino distributes his signature prints in highly sought-after, limited hand-signed volumes of 80 copies or fewer, individual works and complete folios from his decades-long career are actively preserved in esteemed specialist art books and notable private international Japanese print collections, such as the Christenson Collection.
