Description
This footed glass beaker is a 19th-century Biedermeier period souvenir, likely originating from a glass house in Bohemia or the Bavarian Forest. The vessel is crafted from clear glass with an octagonal faceted body and a ruby-red stain. The red surface is wheel-cut to the clear glass, creating three primary decorative panels. One panel features the name C. Kleist in a white Gothic script, framed by a scrolling foliate cartouche. Another panel depicts a long, multi-story building captioned Bad Altenau. A third panel shows a domed pavilion with a spire, captioned Brunnenplatz i. Pyrmont. Each captioned text is rendered in Gothic script. The upper and lower portions of the body are finished with scrolling foliate and floral borders. The piece stands on a short, faceted stem and a hexagonal base accented with two ruby-stained rings.
