Description
Two golden, patterned ellipses curve into and around each other here, overlapping like two rings caught mid-rotation, their surfaces carrying the same intricate metallic patterning found throughout Koury's Tapestry series. The pale ground behind them lets the gold leaf do most of the work, so the piece reads as warm and glowing from across a room, then resolves into fine, repeating detail up close.
At 36 by 36 inches, this is one of the largest and most balanced compositions in the series, well suited to a dining room or entry where its symmetry and warmth can set the tone for the whole space.
Rebecca Koury is a contemporary painter based in Monterey, California, whose luminous, richly layered abstractions draw on the textures, colors, and rhythms of the natural world. She earned her BA from the University of Missouri, Kansas City and her MFA in sculpture, with a minor in art history, from the University of Texas at Austin. That sculptural training still shows in her paintings: she builds her canvases in dimensional layers of acrylic, metal leaf, and mixed media, working intuitively to create surfaces that read as both painted and constructed, letting structure and organic form hold each other in balance.
Koury's work is held in corporate and private collections across the country and abroad, including the Bellagio and Aria Resort in Las Vegas, the Ritz-Carlton Dubai, UCSF Medical Center, and the Waldorf Astoria Orlando, and she has shown in solo exhibitions at the Monterey Museum of Art and galleries throughout the Central Coast. She continues to paint from her studio in Monterey, drawing on patterns from fabric, ancient ruins, written language, and the shoreline just beyond her door.
