Charming vintage Italian Florentine-style decorative box cleverly designed as a trompe l'oeil gilt book. The hinged outer cover opens to reveal a concealed velvet-lined compartment, while the deeply ribbed and gilded sides convincingly mimic the page block of an antique volume.

The exterior is finished in warm, time-softened gold with an intricate allover pattern of scrolling foliage, arabesques, and stylized floral motifs picked out in muted green and brown. The dense, finely articulated ornament has a wonderful Renaissance Revival character and recalls the elaborate engraved botanical and foliate decoration associated with Italian luxury house Buccellati.

The book's "binding" is rendered in darker antiqued tones along the edges and spine, providing handsome contrast to the luminous gilt surfaces. Inside, the compartment and underside of the cover are lined in rich burgundy velvet, with a small magnetic closure discreetly securing the box.

A wonderfully decorative object for a coffee table, library, desk, or stacked among actual books. Equally useful as a jewelry, keepsake, or secret storage box. The aged gilding and surface wear give the piece an especially convincing Old World appearance.
