Man Ray was an American visual artist who spent most of his career in Paris. He made significant contributions to the Dada and Surrealist movements, although his association with both was relatively informal. Working across a wide range of media, he nevertheless considered himself first and foremost a painter.
Man Ray was also a pioneering innovator in photography, as well as a fashion and portrait photographer. He is particularly renowned for his experimental photographic works, which he referred to as “rayographs,” a term he coined to describe his camera-less photographic images.
