Angela Fisher commented about a similar ring (1984. op.cit):
"This Dogon ring shows a warrior mounted on a horse, the incised disc representing his shield. Such a ring was given by the Hogon to the military chieftain to wear during his ritual prayers.
For the neighbouring Mossi, this type of ring symbolized chieftainship, power and wealth; for the Senufo it was associated with diviniation. Sometimes the rider was an ancestor figure, worn to impart spiritual power.
If the rider was female, the ring had yet another significance: a a gift from the Hogon to a man who had only daughters and wanted a son. The man would wear it on the little finger of his right hand until a son was born. The Hogon would then be presented with small gifts and the ring returned to him."
