Description
O. Winston Link was an American photographer best known for his dramatic black-and-white images documenting the final years of steam locomotives on the Norfolk and Western Railway in the late 1950s. Trained as a commercial photographer, Link played a pivotal role in transforming railroad photography into a serious artistic and enthusiast pursuit. He was a pioneer of large-scale night photography, meticulously staging many of his railroad scenes and favoring nighttime settings to achieve maximum visual impact. Unable to control natural light or the physical environment, Link developed innovative flash techniques to illuminate massive moving trains, famously stating that since he could not move the sun or the tracks, he would instead create his own lighting. His technically ambitious and carefully orchestrated photographs stand as iconic records of an industrial era at its end.
