American Painted Cast-Iron 'Eagle and Eaglets' Mechanical Bank, J. & E. Stevens Co., Cromwell, Connecticut, Late 19th Century. The base stamped in raised letters "PAT JAN 23/ 1883," missing the trap.The J. & E. Stevens Company (John & Elisha) was formed in 1843 and located in Cromwell, Connecticut. In 1869 it produced its first mechanical bank, and became well-known for innovative designs in both mechanical and still banks. It also manufactured other types of toys such as stoves and cannons. In 1928 it began making cap pistols exclusively, and during World War II the company closed because of the shortage of iron. It was sold to Buckley Brothers, New York in 1950.H: 5.75 in., W: 7.625 in., D: 4 in.
