Val A. Samuelson was a California desert-based prolific artist, art director, teacher, professional art show juror and lecturer. Samuelson grew up in Minnesota and studied painting, sculpture and graphic design at the Minneapolis School of Art and the Minneapolis Institute of Fine Arts. In his artistic practice, Samuelson's paintings feature bold color-filled abstract compositions, like the present painting from circa 1962.
Samuelson worked as an art director for two advertising agencies in Los Angeles before moving to Palm Springs. He worked as a part-time editor of the "Villager Magazine" (now "Palm Springs Life") and also served as Art Director of the Palm Springs Desert Museum for over a decade. Samuelson was honored as "Artist of the Year" in 1990 by the La Quinta Arts Association and his work was exhibited in one-person and group shows throughout California and Arizona, as well as in Chicago and Minneapolis.

Condition
Visual: Overall good appearance. Dust accumulation and occasional specks of old, darkened varnish. Small puncture holes visible on the recto at the upper center of both the left and right edges, originating from the verso. Minor wear in the upper left corner.
Blacklight: No evidence of restoration.
Frame: 31.5" H x 33.5" W x 1.75" D
