Description
(1885 - 1966) American admiral, Commander in Chief of the U.S. Pacific Fleet during World War II and largely responsible for the successful 'island-hopping' campaign against the Japanese. Nice content T.L.S. on Navy Dept. letterhead, 1p. 4to., Washington, Dec. 14, 1945 to an admirer in Oregon. Nimitz thanks the man for: '...your considerate letter of December 8 and your very kind words of congratulation to me...' Nimitz also thanks the man for sending a book, which he expects will make for 'worthwhile reading'. Fine. Two weeks earlier, Nimitz's nomination as Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) was confirmed by the US Senate, and on December 15, the day after writing this letter, he relieved Fleet Admiral Ernest J. King.
