(1811 - 1873) U. S. Navy officer, captain of the steam sloop USS KEARSARGE, engaged and sank the Confederate commerce raider CSS ALABAMA under Raphael Semmes off Cherbourg. Terrific war-date signature ‘Jno A Winslow Captain U.S.N. Kearsarge Nov. 9th 1864' in black ink on a lightly lined slip, matted with a reproduction photograph and set into a carved wood frame. Fine. Signed five months after Winslow's famous encounter with Raphael Semmes and the Alabama off Cherbourg.
