(1759-1818) American Navy officer who served in the Continental Navy during the Revolutionary War and as a commodore in the U.S. Navy during the War of 1812, during which he and a corps of sailors and Marines unsuccessfully defended Washington, D.C. from the approaching British. Partly-printed D.S., 1p. 8vo., Havana, Jan. 14, 1792, in which Barney approves the transport of a slave ironically named ‘Liberty’ to the United States and attests that he is ‘…free of heart defects, gout, or leprosy, or any other ailments that human nature can suffer…’.
