ANSON JONES (1798-1858) American physician who served as the fourth and last President of the Republic of Texas. In this capacity Jones oversaw the final negotiations that led to the annexation of Texas by the United States declaring, on Feb. 19, 1846, ‘The Republic of Texas is no more’. JUST 10 DAYS BEFORE ANNEXATION OF TEXAS, JONES GRANTS LAND TO ONE OF THE ‘OLD THREE HUNDRED’ Rare, partly-printed D.S. as President of Texas, 1p. folio, Austin, Feb. 9, 1846, in which Jones grants to James Jones 460 acres in Gonzales County. Boldly signed at conclusion, with blind-embossed seal at left still bearing red ribbon attachment. Dampstained throughout the area bearing engrossment, heavy folds, still good. James Wales Jones (1797-1847) with his brother Randal, was one of the first of Stephen F. Austin’s colonists who settled in Texas in 1821. He served in the Texas Army during the Texas War for Independence under Wyly Martin, a former scout of William Henry Harrison who also served under Andrew Jackson in the War of 1812.
