(1793 - 1863) American soldier and politician, defeated Santa Anna at San Jacinto and became first president of the Republic of Texas. Partly-printed D.S., as governor of Texas, 2pp. 8 x 4 in., Austin, Feb. 8, 1861, a treasury warrant paying $190.85 to two attorneys representing 65 men, for ‘Protection of the Frontier this account being for Services in Capt Ross’s Co. Mount’d Volunteers’. Houston signs on the verso in black ink. Shows folds with partial splits thereto reinforced at the edges with archival tape, lightly toned, with a minor paper loss at the bottom right corner, and with the very end of Houston’s signature cross-inscribed with the names of the aforementioned attorneys, in very good condition overall.
