Late 19th-early 20th century, Chinese
A Chinese export silver cigarette case with relief motif of a dragon amongst stylized clouds. The verso has a relief motif of a large feline-like creature and a bird. Tigers, phoenixes, and dragons are all quintessential Chinese symbolic motifs and act as three of the four "Holy Beasts", representative of the balance of Imperial power, cosmic opposition, and complementary forces.
