Description
By the J. & E. Stevens Company. Cromwell, Ct. - Circa Mid 1870's. This bank was originally marketed by the Stevens Company as the "Race Course Bank". A thin powerful spring sets the motion of the tin racehorses into action. To operate the bank, pull the mechanism taut and set both horse's front foot just behind the painted star found on the base. Dropping coins into the track tout's chute causes the spring to release, sending the horses around the track and through the arches. Most toy bank collectors consider the "flanged base" variant of the Horse Race Bank as more eye appealing than the "straight base" version. This red, white and green specimen is very strong quality for this particular toy bank.
