William Winterbotham (1763-1829)

Wrote "An Historical, Geographical, Commercial, and Philosophical View of the American United States, and of the European Settlements in America and the West-Indies."

Reverend William Winterbotham was a British Baptist minister and political prisoner.

Born in London, Winterbotham became a Baptist minister and gained a reputation for his eloquent preaching.

He was known for his radical political views, particularly his support for the French Revolution and his criticisms of the British government. In 1792, he gave two sermons in Plymouth, England, where he expressed these views. This led to his prosecution for sedition.

Winterbotham was found guilty and sentenced to four years in Newgate Prison (1793-1797).

While in prison, he wrote and published several works, including: "An Historical, Geographical, Commercial, and Philosophical View of the American United States" (1795) and "An Historical, Geographical, and Philosophical View of the Chinese Empire" (1795).

After his release from prison, he continued his ministry, though he was more cautious in expressing his political views.

While he didn't physically travel to the United States, he had a significant intellectual and political connection to the country. He was a supporter of republican ideals and saw the United States as an example of a successful republic, in contrast to the monarchy in Britain.
