STILL LIFE was created in April 2022 and photographed in Shanghai. Through a restrained and minimal visual structure, the work places fine lines, a suspended egg, and an isolated spear-like form below within the same space, creating a relationship that is both still and tense. As Maleonn has said, although this work is not documentary in nature, it truly preserves "the feeling of that moment." Here, "still life" is no longer simply the presentation of objects, but rather a condensation of time, emotion, and a state of being.
Maleonn, born in Shanghai in 1972, is a Chinese contemporary conceptual photographer, artist, and director. He began studying at Shanghai Huashan Art School at the age of twelve and later graduated from the Shanghai University College of Fine Arts. In his early career, he worked as an art director and director for advertising and commercial films, an experience that shaped his strong command of staging, theatrical structure, and highly controlled visual expression. Around 2003, he gradually turned to independent artistic practice, using photography as his primary medium while also working in painting, installation, video, and puppet theatre. His work moves between reality and fantasy, memory and myth, making him one of the most distinctive voices in Chinese contemporary photography.
