Description
USA, 1992
10" x 10 1/2"
printed matter
Comprehensive photographic monograph documenting the global scale and human toll of the HIV/AIDS epidemic across diverse international communities.
Brian Weil (American, 1954–1996) was a documentary photographer and activist dedicated to chronicling highly marginalized subcultures and urgent social crises, including the global AIDS epidemic, the Hasidic community, and underground sex workers. As an early member of ACT UP and the founder of New York City's first needle exchange program, his artistic practice was entirely inseparable from direct public action. His gritty, high-contrast black-and-white compositions intentionally reject aesthetic distance in favor of raw human connection. Weil's powerful documentary oeuvre is preserved in archival collections and exhibited in institutions focused on social justice and photographic history.
