Description
USA/Canada, 1987
26 3/4" x 27"
offset print poster
Conceived in response to an invitation from the Koury Wingate Gallery for a June 1987 exhibition supporting the American Foundation for AIDS Research (amfAR). The graphic substitutes the typography of Robert Indiana's 1966 LOVE motif to generate public visibility for the epidemic. This poster was distributed internationally through street-level campaigns in New York City, Toronto, Berlin, and San Francisco, and later critiqued by localized New York activist groups for its coded presentation and omission of explicit safe sex instructions.
General Idea (Canadian, active 1969–1994) was a groundbreaking conceptual artist collective founded by AA Bronson, Felix Partz, and Jorge Zontal. Operating across media including publishing, television, sculpture, and painting, the trio pioneered a practice of cultural subversion and media critique that challenged notions of authorship and consumerism. From 1987 until the collective's dissolution following the deaths of Partz and Zontal from AIDS-related complications in 1994, their work focused heavily on the visibility of the global epidemic. Their historic contributions are celebrated in major retrospectives and held in permanent collections globally, including the National Gallery of Canada, the Museum of Modern Art, and the Tate Modern.
