Matthew Barney (American, b. 1967) is a world-renowned contemporary artist and filmmaker whose highly ambitious, multidisciplinary practice fuses sculpture, video installation, performance art, and athletic choreography. Best known for his monumental Cremaster Cycle and the ongoing Drawing Restraint series begun in 1987, his ritualistic narratives explore the boundaries of geography, geology, biology, and mythology using avant-garde materials like cast plastic and prosthetic wax. He was awarded the Hugo Boss Prize and the Venice Biennale's Europa Prize, and his landmark oeuvre is held in permanent collections including the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, the Museum of Modern Art, and the Tate Modern.
