Ann Messner (American, b. 1952) is a sculptor and public artist whose practice uses familiar, utilitarian objects to investigate the intersections of private experience, public space, and political structures. Emerging in New York's downtown art scene in the 1980s, her large-scale metal sculptures and site-specific public interventions challenge the social and psychological dimensions of contemporary urban life. She has been awarded fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Guggenheim Foundation, and her work has been widely exhibited at institutions such as the Whitney Museum of American Art and is held in various public and private collections.
