Description
An original ink on paper, measuring 15 x 17 inches, framed drawing by internationally acclaimed Cuban contemporary artist Tomás Esson, Flag (2002) transforms the familiar image of the American flag into a vibrant, satirical composition populated by expressive figures and fantastical birds. Combining political commentary with dark humor and Neo-Expressionist energy, the work challenges conventional ideas of nationalism, power, and cultural identity. This drawing was created specifically for Cuba Art NY's inaugural exhibition, adding important historical provenance.
Tomás Esson (b.1963, Havana, Cuba) is one of the most influential figures in contemporary Cuban art. A graduate of the Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes San Alejandro and the Instituto Superior de Arte (ISA), he emerged during the groundbreaking generation of Cuban artists in the 1980s whose provocative works challenged political and cultural conventions. Following the censorship of his landmark 1988 exhibition A Tarro Partido II, Esson relocated to the United States, where he continues to live and work between Miami and New York.
His work has been exhibited internationally, including major exhibitions at ICA Miami, David Lewis Gallery (New York), and Fredric Snitzer Gallery (Miami). His paintings and drawings are represented in the collections of the Whitney Museum of American Art, Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes (Havana), ICA Miami, Ludwig Forum für Internationale Kunst (Germany), MOCA San Diego, and Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Monterrey.
