The first figurine was discovered in 1928 near the village of Nok in Kaduna State during tin mining operations. Nok art is considered the earliest example of large three- dimensional sculpture in sub-Saharan Africa. Figures were crafted from terracotta (baked clay) and often depicted human figures, animals and intricate hairstyles.
