Description
This pair of glazed ceramic figurines depicts anthropomorphic monkeys in a seated position, designed in the Singerie tradition. Each monkey is dressed in a red fez, a light-colored vest with dark blue trim, and matching trousers, and is shown reading a small green book. The figures are seated on square pedestals featuring a diamond-textured pattern and decorated with red and blue swags. The pedestals rest on rectangular bases with a dark blue bottom edge and a scalloped white and blue border. The underside of one figurine is incised with the number 187 and contains a central circular vent hole. The underside of the second figurine features faint, incised cursive characters that appear to read as a W or M followed by R. 3623. Both pieces are finished with a glossy glaze showing a fine network of crazing.
