Description
This is a Plains Indian war shield, possibly Cheyenne. The shield is constructed from brain-tanned leather stretched and shaped into a circular form over a stiff leather disc (21” in diameter) and painted with traditional designs. The central design features a sun symbol in red and orange surrounded by quadrants of yellow and green. In the yellow quadrants are a bird and an unknown red/black symbol. Attached to the shield are multiple feathers of birds of prey, with bells attached, which holds some symbolic significance. A long fringed leather tail is also attached and adorned with additional feathers. Overall dimensions: 23” wide x 68” long x 3” deep. Please see photos.
