Hunt Slonem (American, b. 1951), Picul, Oil on Canvas, 2000, signed, dated and titled on verso, depicting an abstract scene with birds in tones of blue, yellow, red, and green on black branches against cream background; composed of six canvas panels, one detached; unframed. Dimensions of the separate panel: 36 in. x 10 1/4 in.Hunt Slonem is an American artist known for his neo-expressionist style and nature-inspired works. He is especially recognized for paintings of bunnies, butterflies, and tropical birds. Slonem was born in Kittery in 1951 and spent much of his childhood moving because his father served as a Navy officer. During his youth, he lived in places including Hawaii, California, and Connecticut, which influenced his interest in tropical imagery. He later studied painting and art history at Tulane University in New Orleans. After graduating, Slonem moved to Manhattan and became involved in the contemporary art scene during the 1970s. His career gained momentum after artist Janet Fish offered him studio space in 1975. Slonem’s artwork is included in the collections of major museums such as the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
