Description
An ornate six-arm hanging chandelier in the high Art Nouveau style, composed of finely cast and chased brass scrollwork suspending a richly modelled ceramic central bowl, hand-decorated in relief with large cream and violet blossoms on a crimson ground. The pierced brass arms terminate in foliate candle cups and drip pans of acanthus design, united by decorative linking chains and a tri-lobed ceiling mount of the same period. The ceramic section closely matches the companion Hinks & Son kerosene lamp in the same collection in palette, glaze texture, and floral motif, suggesting production within the same decorative series or possibly by a contracted ceramic supplier such as Royal Doulton or Linthorpe.
It is priced to sell below the appraisal value. The appraisal is available upon request.
The chandelier retains all of its original brass arms, fittings, and decorative chains; only the internal mounting hardware securing the bowl has been replaced, and it is executed sympathetically and fully reversible. The candles presently shown are decorative wax reproductions. No structural losses or restoration are visible on the ceramic body, and the brass surfaces exhibit a mellow, untouched patina consistent with age.
Late-Victorian and Art Nouveau hybrid chandeliers of this calibre, particularly those combining relief-moulded ceramics with finely cast gilt-brass arms, are uncommon survivors. The aesthetic and technical correspondence between the Hinks & Son oil lamp and the chandelier enhances both objects' interest and collective market value when kept together.
When considered alongside the matching oil lamp, the ensemble forms a complete decorative statement of its period, representing the union of British metalworking and ceramic artistry at the fin de siècle.
