Description
Exceptional pair of antique Viennese cold-painted bronze figural lamps, believed to have originated as stand-alone decorative sculptures and later professionally commissioned and mounted as custom table lamps by luxury design house John-Richard.
Beautifully patinated throughout, the figures retain wonderful age-related surface variation and a naturally worn cold-painted finish that adds depth, authenticity, and decorative character. The sculptural forms have strong visual presence from every angle and are mounted on stepped plinth bases with elegant curved brass stems. John-Richard socket labels are present.
These rare Bergmann-style Austrian cold-painted Orientalist figure lamps work beautifully within Hollywood Regency, chinoiserie, Anglo-Indian, eclectic, maximalist, traditional, and globally inspired interiors. Comparable Viennese cold-painted bronze Orientalist figures have appeared through major auction houses, including Heritage Auctions.
The figures appear to have originally been stand-alone decorative sculptures and were later professionally mounted as custom table lamps, blending collectible figural sculpture with dramatic designer lighting. Each figure depicts a man in traditional Chinese and Arab dress, with expressive modeling, intricate casting, hand-applied polychrome decoration, gilt accents, and richly textured garments associated with collectible Vienna bronze workmanship.
A comparable pair of Viennese cold-painted bronze figures depicting men in Chinese and Arab dress sold through Heritage Auctions on October 5, 2013, for $2,750. The auction listing described the sculptures as:
"A Pair of Viennese Cold Painted Bronze Figures of Men in Chinese and Arab Dress. 20th century. 12 inches high (30.5 cm)."
These lamps appear to utilize the same or closely related figural models, later custom-mounted as decorative lighting.
An exceptional and highly decorative pair intended for sophisticated collected interiors.
