Description
An oil on canvas portrait of a gentleman in red-jacketed riding regalia that was exhibited at a Royal Academy Exhibition in 1904 at Derby, England.. The painting is signed by artist J.B. Pearl and the label on the reverse identifies the subject as T.H. Barnard, Esq. and a stamp indicated Royal Academy Exhibition. Additionally, the painting bears the label of the frame maker, James Bourlet & Sons, Ltd. This is a particularly well executed portrait, with the light and shadow playing off the brass buttoned, red wool coat of subject but what makes this portrait alluring is the masterful rendering of the face of the sitter. His head is turned up and to his left slightly and his gaze is off to the right of the viewer with an expression is not exactly one of joyful anticipation of the hunt but rather one of gloomy resignation, as if he isn't looking forward at all to going out into the wind and rain on the back of, perhaps, a hard to manage horse. Another nice touch is the gold pin that secures the white cravat at his throat. The painting in the foliate motif carved frame with gilt highlights measures 29.5" wide overall x
34.5" high overall .
