Description
Antique Olive Green Wedgwood Jasperware Pitcher England, Circa 1891–1908
A distinguished example of Wedgwood's celebrated Jasperware in the rarer olive green colorway "” a departure from the ubiquitous blue, and all the more coveted for it. Dating to the late Victorian through Edwardian period (circa 1891–1908), this generously proportioned pitcher showcases Wedgwood craftsmanship at its most refined.
The body is richly decorated with applied white sprigged relief figures in the neoclassical manner "” robed maidens bearing urns, a winged figure upon a pedestal, and attendant figures engaged in ritual "” all framed above by elegant swag-and-medallion garlands. The matte olive ground sets the ivory relief into sharp, sculptural contrast, recalling the ancient cameos that inspired Josiah Wedgwood's original vision.
The base bears impressed Wedgwood marks consistent with the dating, confirming its English manufacture and period authenticity. The interior and rim retain their warm grey-white biscuit finish, unblemished and clean.
Size: 7 1/2" handle to spout, 5 1/2" at the centre, and 6" tall.
Condition is excellent for its age: no chips, cracks, or restoration. Minor surface patina and light use marks are wholly consistent with a piece of this era and only add to its honest character. A handsome addition to a collection of antique English ceramics, or a singular statement piece displayed on its own.
