Description
Antique Walnut Campaign Butler's Tray with Folding X-Form Stand, American, Circa 1850s
A rare and deeply evocative piece of mid-19th century American material culture, this solid walnut butler's tray with its original folding X-form stand occupies a fascinating intersection of domestic elegance and frontier practicality. Dating to the Civil War era, this handsome tray and stand combination may well have served in an officer's campaign tent as a portable surface for maps, dispatches, and evening refreshment "” or equally have graced the parlor or dining room of a prosperous Pennsylvania, Maryland, or Virginia household as a distinguished drinks tray. Either provenance speaks to a life fully and interestingly lived.
The tray itself is a study in honest, confident craftsmanship "” constructed in solid walnut with straight sided dovetailed corners that speak to a skilled maker who understood that good joinery is its own decoration. The early historic finish, almost certainly original, has mellowed beautifully over its 170-plus years to a rich, deep patina that no modern refinishing could hope to replicate. At nearly 31 inches long and 18½ inches wide it is a generous and practical size, easily accommodating a full service of drinks or a substantial spread of papers and maps.
The X-form folding stand is equally well considered, with turned legs that echo the tray's refined but unpretentious character. Most remarkably, the stand retains its original woven webbing "” the simple but ingenious mechanism that holds the stand open at the correct angle "” an increasingly rare survival that speaks to the piece's careful and undisturbed history. Together, tray and stand present as a complete and fully functional object, ready to serve another century of use.
Most likely originating from Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, or points south, this is a piece that rewards close examination and invites contemplation of the remarkable American history it has witnessed.
