Description
Vintage Bohemian Cut to Clear Lead Crystal Wine Glasses, Set of Seven, Circa 1950s–1960s
A breathtakingly beautiful and visually spectacular set of seven Bohemian cut to clear lead crystal wine glasses, presented in a glorious and richly varied palette of jewel toned colors "” three cobalt blue, two forest green, one amethyst purple, and one ruby red "” that together create a table setting of extraordinary chromatic richness and decorative drama. Sets of this quality, color variety, and completeness are increasingly difficult to assemble and represent exactly the kind of irreplaceable decorative object that serious collectors and discerning interior enthusiasts compete to find.
The cut to clear technique "” one of the most visually rewarding achievements in the entire history of European glass making "” involves applying a layer of richly colored glass over a clear crystal body and then cutting through the colored layer in precise geometric and floral patterns to reveal the brilliant clear crystal beneath. On these glasses the cut decoration is concentrated on the richly colored bowls "” deeply cut star and geometric motifs combined with etched floral and grape vine decoration executed with crisp precision and considerable decorative impact. The stems and bases are elegantly pressed crystal, a production method characteristic of mid-century Bohemian export glass of the 1950s and 1960s, when Bohemian workshops produced glasses of considerable decorative beauty and impact for the postwar Western European and American export market.
The contrast between the deep jewel toned color of the bowls and the sparkling clarity of the cut areas creates a visual effect of extraordinary luminosity and depth "” each glass catching and scattering light with a brilliance that transforms any table setting into something genuinely magical. The seven glasses present consistently and cohesively as a group "” their shared form and cutting vocabulary uniting the varied colors into a harmonious and visually compelling ensemble that is as spectacular displayed on a sideboard or bar cart as it is in use at a dinner table.
At 8¼ inches tall with a 3¼ inch base and 2¾ inch top diameter these are well proportioned and elegantly scaled wine glasses, comfortable in the hand and magnificent on the table. The condition throughout is excellent "” no chips or cracks on any of the seven glasses, with only the lightest wear from use entirely consistent with their age.
A rare opportunity to acquire a complete and spectacular set of Bohemian cut to clear crystal in an unusually varied and beautiful multicolor combination "” a genuine statement piece for any interior or table.
