Description
This wooden figure is known as an African Colon (colonial) statue. These figures emerged during the colonial period, depicting European settlers, soldiers, or local officials in Western attire like the pith helmet and uniform. Usually the colon is white, however in this case he is black to indicate that he has adopted colonial ways. While they resemble colonists, for the Baule, these figures often represented "spirit spouses" (blolo bian) from the afterlife, reimagined in the modern status symbols of the time. Hand-carved wood, featuring enamel weathered and aged patina.
Condition: Used and slightly worn by the passing of time and handling.
Dimensions: 22 x 7 x8 inches.
