Lega tribe of the eastern DRC crafted this traditional Idimu face mask to function as a sacred collective insignia and instructional tool within the highest ranks (Yananio and Kindi) of the Bwami Society. The Bwami are a governing hierarchical association dedicated to teaching moral philosophy, political ethics, and ancestral wisdom through proverbs. The artifact is defined by a heart-shaped facial plane heavily coated in a white kaolin clay pigment (mpemba) symbolizing the spiritual realm, which stands in stark visual contrast to a dark, encrusted crown and jawline, which are blackened with a traditional hot mixture of smoked tree resin (copal) and charcoal soot. Structurally, the mask features abstract coffee-bean slit eyes, a narrow elongated nose bridge, an open rectangular mouth, and a series of drilled attachment holes along the lower rim meant to secure a traditional liana plant-fiber beard. The overall structure is stable with minor edge wear, expected superficial abrasions, and a beautifully layered, authentic ritual patina showcasing characteristic handling wear around the eye and mouth borders where the underlying dark wood has broken through the white clay over time.
