Description
Lega Lukungu mask from the DRC. Crafted from a turtle carapace, which represents wisdom and caution to the Lega people. These masks were reserved for high-ranking initiates of the Bwami society, particularly those in the kindi grade. The surface is decorated with circle-and-dot motifs, while the border often features a braided border of vegetable fibers adorned with palm nut shells. Lukungu masks were not typically worn on the face but were instead held in the hand or worn on the arm during rituals and ceremonies. The Lukungu was used as a medicine / magic potion pouch. The suspended palm nuts click and clonk against the hollow shell when shaken or moved.
Date: 20th Century
Dimensions: 7 x 5 x 3.
Condition: The handwoven string has become detached in a couple areas (note photo).
