Description
This one-piece Kuba figural mortar from the DRC, is an example of Central African courtly utilitarian art. Carved from a single, block of dense local hardwood. The object features an ancestral figure seamlessly integrated into the upper rim of a bulbous, circular grinding bowl. The figure's head displays a distinctively stylized, boxy court coiffure, balancing an elongated jawline and serene, downcast almond eyes. The torso sweeps forward with hands resting flat against the lower abdomen in a traditional Kuba gesture of respect and lineage continuity. It is a personal implement for crushing lime or tobacco. The piece displays an exceptional, rich dark brown handled patina with deep natural wood grain splits and rugged wear around the grinding base that confirm field use.
