Arthur Conan Doyle's 1927 work, Pheneas Speaks, documents channeled communications mediated through his wife Lady Jean Conan Doyle and others. To prepare the work, Doyle acted as editor, rather than author, compiling the messages Lady Doyle and others received from a spirit guide named Pheneas. Much of the text was prepared through automatic writing, during which Lady Doyle would enter a trance-like state, and, holding a pen, her hand would write out messages uninfluenced by conscious thought or planning. These sessions usually happened during private family séances held in the psychic room of the Doyle home in Windlesham. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle would sit with his wife during these sessions, and members of the family would ask Pheneas questions and the spirit would write back answers. Doyle collected and organized the writings, primarily executed between 1921 and 1927, and he selected those transcripts he believed would be most beneficial to the public. He omitted many of the apocalyptic messages received from Pheneas. Doyle believed the work was a divine message sent to humanity through his wife.
