Description
Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) stands as a monumental landmark in epic science fiction. Co-written by Kubrick and Arthur C. Clarke, and partially inspired by Clarke's 1951 short story The Sentinel, the film pushed the boundaries of visual effects and narrative structure under Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer's initial roadshow exhibition marketing. When first released in 1968, Kubrick's masterpiece was not an instant commercial smash hit. Recognizing that the film was finding a passionate, unintended audience among the trippy, acid-taking counterculture crowd, MGM marketing executive Mike Kaplan engineered a brilliant promotional relaunch in 1970. Pivoting away from technical spacecraft imagery, the new campaign fully leaned into the psychedelic experience, introducing the definitive promotional tagline: "The Ultimate Trip." Two distinct, minimalist posters painted by artist Robert Wilding were created for this historic 1970 campaign: The Star Child: Featuring the famous cosmic fetus graphic, this remains the standard version most collectors encounter today. And The Cosmic Eye: This radical, psychedelic close-up eye design was printed exclusively for a brief, hyper-localized relaunch campaign in New York City. Because of the highly restricted regional release, the vast majority of these "Eye" variants were systematically destroyed at the end of the theatrical run. Today, it is estimated that fewer than ten examples are known to survive worldwide, cementing its status as one of the rarest, most elusive, and heavily sought-after movie posters in the history of cinema collecting. This museum-grade specimen has been professionally restored to its full visual glory. While it was not always this pristine, expert conservation has beautifully stabilized and revived the piece. The meticulous quality of the linen-backed restoration is clearly evident upon close inspection, particularly when comparing the preserved imagery against un-restored survivors. A premier centerpiece for any elite collection of vintage alternative media or fine cinematic art.
