Description
Native American, South Central United States, ca. 3000 BCE – 1500 CE. A weighty curved, russet sandstone, shaped by patient abrasion into a crescent form. The surface bears flaking and weathering from long burial, use, or exposure, its color a warm oxidized brown. Identified by an earlier collector as a "ceremonial fire-starter spiral stone" from Cherokee County - possibly Oklahoma - the object more plausibly served as a hand-held implement: a grinder, polisher, or ritual weight. Size: 10" L x 3.5" W (25.4 cm L x 8.9 cm W).
