Description
This collection consists of late 19th-century American advertising booklets, pamphlets, and color lithographed trade cards. The group includes two versions of The Enterprising Housekeeper by Helen Louise Johnson, published by The Enterprise Mfg. Co. of Philadelphia; one is a cream-colored 1897 Edition and the other is a green softcover edition featuring 200 Tested Recipes. Other pamphlets include an Arm & Hammer Baking Soda booklet titled A Friend in Need and a Larkin Idea publication. The ephemera features several large-format chromolithograph trade cards, including an advertisement for A&P Tea depicting a domestic kitchen scene, a Woolson Spice Co. Christmas card, and anthropomorphic Easter greetings for Lion Coffee. Also present are multiple trade cards for sewing machines, including Mother's Helper and The Tea Party for the Singer Manufacturing Company (copyright 1899) and a card for The Improved Domestic Sewing Machine. Other advertisements include a New Easy Lawn Mower card featuring the Statue of Liberty, a card for Rumford Baking Powder, and a Happy Days card for Carter's Little Liver Pills. The reverse sides of the cards contain detailed promotional text and further illustrations for products such as Lion Coffee from the Woolson Spice Co. of Toledo, Ohio, and various domestic machinery.
