Description
15 inches tall. A Japanese Satsuma-style earthenware double-handled vase, likely dating to the late 19th or early 20th century. The piece is crafted from earthenware with a characteristic fine-crackled cream glaze visible on the interior and the underside of the base. The exterior features a dark ground, likely black or deep navy, decorated with thick overglaze enamels and moriage (raised relief). The front of the vase depicts a narrative scene with two figures in traditional Japanese attire, including a woman in a green kimono and a figure in a patterned yellow garment, set against a brilliant metallic-blue landscape. The neck features a large, stylized floral blossom with raised beaded dots in the center. The reverse side is decorated with large, abstract floral and leaf motifs in shades of orange, green, and yellow with gold outlines. The vessel is designed with two gilded scroll-form handles and a ruffled tulip-style flared rim. Several illegible handwritten marks in black pigment are present on the base.
