Excerpted from the Peter Max Archives, Peter Max was named official artist for Operation Sail 2000 - a tremendous celebration of the new millennium.
It was the largest peacetime assembling of naval and training ships to date - 120 tall ships, more than 40 warships from around the world, and 70,000 smaller pleasure craft, all gathered in New York Harbor.
Peter Max joined President Clinton on July 4, 2000 as the president reviewed a 17-mile-long formation of ships.
Max painted several 10 foot high Statue of Liberty portraits at the milestone event.
In this commemorative artwork, Max illustrates the striking imagery of that day - majestic tall ships on the harbor sailing amidst his iconic Statue of Liberty and Lady Liberty portraits in the foreground and on the horizon. This artwork is remarkably reproduced capturing the most kinetic and expressionistic of Max's brushwork and his dynamic and riveting color palette - with the artist's own cosmic 'Zen Boats' sailing among the tall ships.
