Antique Carved Wood Caryatid Newel Post - or Column in Female Form

Description

C.1875, nicely carved, antique caryatid newel post with surmounting Corinthian style capital, on a temporary square base. This "caryatid" or column in the form of a classical female figure, has lovely naturalistic features front and back and draping garment with slightly exposed chest. Wood has beautiful tone and grain pattern which accentuates the curves of the figure.
