Description
Rare Set of Four Georgian Irish Cut Glass Candlesticks with Pagoda Profile, Circa 1810
A superb and rare matched set of four period Irish cut glass candlesticks from the early 19th century, dating to circa 1810. Executed in fine high-lead crystal, each candlestick is finely hand-cut in a dramatic sculptural silhouette that could be described as "pagoda-form""”a tiered, architectural profile favored during the Georgian Regency period, when chinoiserie and neoclassical tastes often intertwined.
The candlesticks are constructed from a single piece of glass (not assembled or fused), with boldly faceted baluster stems featuring stacked knops and spiral fluting. The base is deeply scalloped in a petal motif, radiating light with brilliant clarity and detail. Each bobeche is original and intact, deeply cut with alternating leaf- or fan-like motifs and dramatic crown-shaped edges"”adding to the architectural drama of the overall design.
In excellent condition overall. Three of the four have only the most minor expected wear in the form of tiny flea-bite chips to the edges. One candlestick has an old, stable crack in the foot (shown), which does not affect its upright stability or structural integrity. The set has been preserved with great care and displays beautifully.
Unmarked, as was customary of the period, but very likely from one of the premier Irish glasshouses of the time"”such as Waterford, Penrose, or the Dublin-based Dobson or Williams firms.
Dimensions: 9.5" high x 5.25" diameter at base
