Description
Postmodern Murano Glass Mosaic Biomorphic Mirror, Italy, circa 1990s
Dimensions:
42" H x 37" W x 3" D
Inset Mirror: 39" H x 26" W
A striking example of postmodern design, this large sculptural mirror features a free-form biomorphic silhouette and a richly encrusted frame set with hundreds of individually applied Murano glass mosaic tiles. Italian, circa 1990s, the piece embodies the playful materiality and bold visual language associated with the Memphis Milano movement and Radical Design.
The undulating frame is cast from a dense resin or composite material, likely fiberglass or a similar sculptural medium, finished at the rear in textured gold. The surface is fully adorned with square Murano glass cabochons in a rhythmic grid of translucent hues"”clear, smoky gray, deep amber, cobalt, pearl, and iridescent white"”each tile catching light with brilliant refraction and subtle depth. These tiles are set in hand-laid mortar, giving the piece a tactile, jewel-like quality.
The inset mirror glass is cut to follow the inner contour of the frame's organic edge, echoing the flowing lines of the perimeter. The back is reinforced with a professionally mounted plywood panel and hardware for secure hanging.
Unmarked, but clearly crafted with a high level of artisan detail, this mirror functions as both a practical object and a sculptural wall feature"”ideal for a collector's interior, modernist home, or design-forward commercial space.
Materials and Construction:
The frame is composed of a biomorphic-shaped resin or composite base (possibly fiberglass or cast polymer), finished on the reverse in a textured, gilt surface.
The front is densely set with hundreds of hand-cut Murano glass mosaic tiles in a repeating grid pattern. These square cabochons vary in tone"”clear, smoky gray, amber, black, cobalt, and iridescent white"”adding visual depth through light refraction.
Each tile is individually embedded in a cement or epoxy mortar, creating a tactile and reflective surface.
The mirror glass is flat, inset, and custom-cut to follow the inner contours of the irregular frame.
The back is reinforced with plywood supports and a flush-fitted, finished backing board for stability and safe hanging.
