Description
Pair of American Sporting Paintings of Elk and White-Tailed Deer Buck, Signed A.W. Crozier, 1907
A rare matched pair of American sporting paintings, signed and dated A.W. Crozier, 1907. Executed in oil on canvas, each tall, narrow canvas (14" × 38") is framed in original giltwood molding (21" × 46" × 2.5", frames with losses).
While little biographical data survives on A.W. Crozier, the paintings fit within the late 19th- and early 20th-century tradition of sporting and game painting popular in Britain, northern Europe, and America. Artists of this genre often worked for private patrons, sportsmen, or hunting lodges, producing romanticized depictions of deer, elk, and game animals in dramatic natural settings. The elongated vertical proportions suggest they may have been intended as decorative panels or to flank a fireplace or hall entrance in a hunting lodge or country house.
First panel: A powerful elk (wapiti bull) is silhouetted against a glowing orange sunset, standing on a ridge with autumn foliage. The proud stance and large antlers emphasize the elk's majesty and evoke the grandeur of the American West.
Second panel: A graceful white-tailed deer buck stands by a snow-lined stream beneath tall stalks of wildflowers gone to seed, painted as decorative, umbrella-like clusters. The muted tones of winter are warmed by the golden horizon, balancing naturalism with romantic atmosphere.
Together, the pair contrasts two of America's most iconic game animals "” the elk of the western ranges and the buck of the eastern woodlands "” making them ideal lodge or hunting room panels. The elongated vertical format suggests they were designed as decorative elements, possibly to flank a fireplace or entryway.
