Description
Leonard Baskin, Icarus, Numbered 3/250, Cast Bronze Wall Plaque, 1969
An exceptional early edition cast bronze wall plaque by influential American artist Leonard Baskin (1922–2000). Titled Icarus, this sculptural relief was produced in 1969 in a limited edition of 250, and this example is numbered 3/250, an early and highly desirable casting.
The circular plaque is cast in solid bronze with a warm brown patina and features a deeply modeled full-length nude figure of Icarus with feathered wings, captured mid-fall in an expressive and muscular pose. Baskin's commanding sculptural style"”rooted in humanism and classical mythology"”is on full display here, evoking both vulnerability and grandeur.
The plaque is signed "BASKIN 1969" on the front, with "ICARUS" incised to the right. The reverse is stamped:
3/250 ICARUS"”LEONARD BASKIN"”1969
Drilled at the top for wall-mounting, this work was likely distributed through a fine arts gallery or print publisher in the late 1960s and retains part of its original label.
Baskin's works reside in numerous major collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Smithsonian, and the Tate. His interpretations of biblical and mythological themes remain widely collected and studied.
